Enrich your environment with “Reversible Destiny Lofts”

Posted on May 2, 2007

Here’s an unorthodox way to challenge your mind: Live in a psychedelic house complete with slanted floors, unpredictable walls, hidden light switches, and other hazards. Artists Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins conceived of the Reversible Destiny Lofts and actually developed 9 of these apartmentsts in a Tokyo suburb.
The purpose, from what I gather, is to keep aging residents on their toes by making everything disorienting and difficult.Seniorhousing_2

My last post described recent research indicating that a stimulating living environment can improve learning and memory. Shusaku and Gins have really embraced this concept, translating the fanciest of enriched rat cages into a human-sized fun-house.

Kanzi, a 27-year-old bonobo, is considered “the first ape to demonstrate real comprehension of spoken speech,” and he understands more than 500 words. He can make knives and use them to cut thick rope. The fabrication anKanzi_2d use of tools is an important characteristic that sets humans apart from most animals.

Kanzi’s talents also include the ability to play video games (watch Kanzi play Pacman.) Now if we can only get him to start using Lumosity, I think he’ll be competing for college admission soon…
