Doctor’s order: Have some fun and get more laughs

While there are many ways to improve the health and fitness of our brains, some approaches are more enjoyable than others. I think that “fun” is an important and often underestimated factor when we decide what health and fitness activities to do. If it’s too painful, we’re not likely to continue doing it, despite how healthy it might be.

In fact having fun can be healthy in and of itself! Laughter is good for the body, brain, and emotional health. Laughing reduces stress, protects the heart and lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, and can improve cognitive function. Brain function improvement due to laughter is probably largely a result of reducing stress and improving emotional well-being, but changes in brain blood flow and neurotransmitter activity might also be involved. In upcoming posts, I’ll discuss specific ways we can maintain and improve brain health while enjoying life.
