Lumosity Logo

Posted on May 18, 2007

Lumosity needs help selecting a logo! Michelle Williamson, who also designed our new website, has provided the following options. We’re trying to decide which one to use, so it would be great to get your opinion by voting with the poll to the right.

I like #2. Creates of a sense of positivity radiating from the person because of the healthy brain inside. Seems relatively subtle and mature, compared to the larger, garish light rays in #3. The light bulb is too generic – are we a power company? The bulb replacing the O in luminosity is kinda neat, but similar things have been done to death in other logos so it no longer registers as unique or interesting to me.

I’m voting for option #4. Seeing the larger image immediately before the lower case “lumosity” in the first 3 options makes me think the image is supposed to be a capital letter.

  3. It’s hard to tell once you know what the word is, but does anyone have the sense that Option #4 could be hard to read? Is the bulb obviously an “o”?

Yeah Mike, that’s actually what I thought about when I saw option 4…might not be immediately obvious unless you already know the name. I think 2 and 3 are the best. When I first saw the options I voted for 3, without hesitation, but now I think David might have a point. 2 has a nice subtle glow, more *suggestive* of radiation rather than flaunting it.

I voted for option 2 going through similar reasoning as above.
Also the Option 3 radiation rays are too reminiscent of renaissance religious art.

I prefer option #2 because of its finesse & simplicity compared to others.

I feel the #3 catches your eye better. Some people might not understand what LUMOSITY is or what it stands for. By showing the head/brain picture with sparks or whatever you call that on #3 above the picture; I feel helps you understand this is possibly for your brain cut & dry.

Personally I would like to see a version of the head without any glow at all. As for number 4 I think it would work better if the light bulb were a bit more subtle.

So of the choices I vote number 2.

On a side note in the design company I work for we would often send a few options to the client. 3 strong options and one control (bad ) option. WAY to many times the client liked the bad logo for whatever reason. Lesson learned. Don’t give people options if there is a chance you won’t like their choice.

Thinking of number 4, maybe a more subtle light blub? So it doesn’t come across as two words but one logo with a slight play on the o. I know, I know. Take what your offered. ;-)

Hmm… The head/brain thing of 2 & 3 is too similar to the logo of other mind-improvement programs, esp. since they were blue/gold, too. #4 reads as two words . So with the as is choices? #1 by default.

But I like the concept in #4! can you play with it a bit? Try the bulb in blue (but leave the yellow halo) maybe resize it tiny bit so it fits better…

erm.. sorry. I’ve been doing a lot of logo designs the past few weeks. I’ve become compulsive! :: slinks away quietly ::

Glad to have found this place though :)

  13. 4th one is better (after a small change), because there’s no need of extra space for an image separately in the left side.

But it reads like 2 words. It can be fixed by adding the blue colour ‘O’ as the INNER BORDER of the light bulb (inside the white area of the bulb, bordering the yellow part)

So it can be read as one word and the light bulb can be seen too!

#2 gets the message across best, but #1 gives you room to expand your services without being tied to just the brain-focused offering. I’d go with either of these two, depending on your long-term plans for the business.

I like # 3 actually. It is simple, effective, and links the idea of brain training, and expansion graphically to the title of the site. I think the rays give it pizazz, and make the logo stick out more. Maybe a little more garish than the subtlety of #2, but more fun as a result.

I like #4 the best as the lightbulb somewhat plays on the word luminescence. Perhaps another idea would be to add a brain inside the open-white space of the lightbulb, that way, it has both the word-image play and explains what the site is focused on.

Choosing one of those I would say #4.
My suggestion would be to take the head from #3 change it to blue, leave the yellow halo then put it into #4 replacing the light bulb. Great place you ahve here!

I don’t like the brains – it might turn off some people (could be polarizing). Either lightbulb is nice. Plus, you want folks focused on the company name instead of someone saying “oh, you mean the company with the brain logo?”

If it has to be one of the above, No. 3 gives the clearest indication that it’s something to do with brain activity. If you were a lightbulb manufacturer I’d go with No. 4 as it’s a bit clever.

Sorry about this, but all of them are a bit clichéd. The head is a guy, right? What’s his ethnicity? Age? Those are distractions from your intent. The cutaway is about biology and vivisection, right? It is just too ambiguous.

I’m thinking the site is about developing brain ‘muscle’, or about sparks flying between brain cells. Can you come up with a clearer indication of stronger brain activity? If not, then No. 3 gives the best indication.

Lumosity is not common word. As it is more about brain, then the word must represent about the brain , hence the logo. So, although no-4 is good (due to its simplicity), I have to remove it.

The option becomes 2 or 3. And I opted 2, 3 is bit weird — a head with rays?

For me, it was between the two vesions with the image of the “brainy head.” The lightbulb graphic combined with “lumo” made me think people might mistake you for a lighting company.
I ultimately voted for #3 because I think the starburst effect over the head added a little dynamic quality that #1 was lacking.
    Good luck!

  35. None of the above.. a more powerful logo could be made if the bulb fitted on top of the “i” as if it needs to be plugged to be turned on. Just my $0.02!!

I agree with arathi — no of the above looks fine to me. Somehow the yellow, white and blue in the logo turn my eyes away. In away just to look at the logo aches my eyes.

A smaller bulb probably placed as the i’s dot would be fine. Also why not keep to a bolder font, like the one used now. Or why not use a solid color instead of gradient? Or if gradient is needed to be hype (as in 2.0 hype) use a slighter gradient.

I think I like the current logo best :)

On a graphical standpoint, the blue white and yellow is fine.

I like 2 the best. 3 has too much going on with the logo itself, 4 looks a bit odd, and the lightbulb is a bit too big in 1.

I can make a better image than any of those – how dare I say this? (I’m usually less preposessing). I am a radiologist & an amateur radio operator, extra class. I do a lot with wire including lots of soldering in my hobby and I know the brain’s anatomy well. So I propose you hold up the decision until I can make a brain sculpture out of wire and solder (copper colored and silver respectively). It probably will take a month. Just day go! and I’ll start working on it.If not, I choose the radiating brain, #3.

I vote #2 – with all the goofy ‘Web 2.0′ names and logos out there, I think the brain imagery is important to illustrate the brand but the radiating lines on #3 are a bit too much.

Like the porridge, #2 is juuust right.

#2, definitely. The point is to enhance the brain, the title implies illumination–#2 gets them both in a simple, clear way. Agree that the rays don’t add and may be a bit too woo-woo for many.

  45. Wow- thanks for all the comments. There are some great ideas in this thread.

Markivee, I’m not sure how we could convert a sculpture into a digital logo, but your wire/solder brain has a lot of potential. Maybe it would look like a diffusion tensor image (DTI)? If you build it, we can do a photo spread in this blog.

No doubt about it. #4 IS the best logo. You are probably asking the wrong people for this vote. Most people dont want to see brains when they see a logo anyway. Logo #4 IS obvious, and just looks more professional than the others.
