Once upon a time, parents told their kids to quit playing those games. Now, right on the heels of last week’s infographic about 5 outdated video game stereotypes, yet another voice is chiming in to argue that kids should start playing certain games: Lumosity just won two Gold Awards from the Parents’ Choice Foundation!
Lumosity’s Gold Awards—the highest award category given by Parents’ Choice—were won for both of our Lumosity training products: Lumosity.com topped the Website category, while our Brain Trainer iPhone app brought home a coveted Mobile App category prize.
Established in 1978, the non-profit Parents’ Choice Foundation has a long history of unearthing and illuminating quality children’s products with an educational bent. If you’ve ever browsed the aisles of any toy store, you know that their prestigious stamp of approval is an image worth quite a few words. But while Lumosity is honored to have been recognized by the foundation, the awards don’t come as a complete surprise. With over 2.5 million web and mobile users 18 years or younger, 3,200 kids from 100 schools enrolled in the Lumosity LEAP program worldwide, and a presentation on arithmetic skill development in young adults using Lumosity at the Learning and Brain Conference in 2011, we’ve known for quite a while that children as well as adults can benefit from Lumosity training!
From the Parents’ Choice review of Lumosity:
“Challenges are designed to be easy to learn, but difficult to master. And that’s the key to mental stimulation. Call them mind meals, neural nutrition, or erudite exercises, these elegantly designed exercises are deliciously fun for students (current or lifelong), athletes (who need discipline of mind and body), professionals (for those distracted by new email), and patients (who may be recovering from physical trauma or illness.)
The training exercises are designed to adapt to each user’s progress and development. So parents, if you haven’t forgotten the name of this mind-sharpening website, consider yourself a step ahead of the game. Family meal plans are available.”
Parents’ Choice hammers home an important fact that distinguishes Lumosity from other products geared purely towards children: Lumosity, above and beyond being an educational tool for your kid or favorite cousin, has the unique quality of appealing to the parent, older sibling, or grandparent of that kid too. Several studies have shown that Lumosity training is effective among groups as disparate as young children with Turner’s Syndrome (Kesler 2011), healthy adults (Hardy et al. 2011), and cancer survivors (Kesler 2010). Regardless of how old you are or where you start from, Lumosity training can make you a better, brighter version of yourself.
Thanks again, Parents’ Choice, for encouraging all families to better themselves! The family that trains together, stays smart together. Play some games today!
