We all struggle with remembering things. It's a challenge to store and retrieve all the information we need to remember, even if it's just for a short period of time.
One of the most important types of memory is known as working memory, which is used for temporarily storing and manipulating information. Working memory is critical in many cognitive processes including reasoning, problem solving and language.
Did you know that with a little work, you can actually improve your working memory? Research presented at the Bay Area Neuroscience Gathering in San Francisco, CA shows that the Lumosity brain games improve working memory.
brain training improves memory
Working memory capacity of 23 individuals was tested before and after training. Subjects who trained with several of the Lumosity brain exercises on a daily basis for 30 days improved on the memory exercises. More importantly, the trained subjects also improved on independent tests of working memory (p<.01, two-tailed t-Test), which were not part of the training, while the control group showed no change upon retesting.

Real Lumosity Memory Improvement Stories
"I was always a sharp kid in school. Teachers told me I could be anything, inviting me to jump grades. After college came seven years of searching for what to become and
what to do with myself. I tried a lot of different things, among others I worked the nights shift as a hotel receptionist. This continued for 3 years. Staying up all night
blurred my thinking. The line between wake and dream became thin. I sometimes found myself coming up with a task and moving to the other side of the reception to handle that
task, only to have forgotten what I was about to do.
Now, I'm studying to become a doctor. My cognition is clear, my memory is back on track (maybe not as adhesive as back in the days, but hey, I´m soon turning 30, give the
old guy a break...), and I go about with my studies without worries. Lumosity truly is fantastic. Nowhere else do I find the possibility to rehearse my mental abilities as
effectively, as structured, and as playfully as with these games presented. I'm basically just enjoying myself - and in turn I find my world and everyday becoming more and
more illuminated. How can you resist that?"

"Amazing games and I have noticed a great improvement with retaining information. In the beginning I noticed more confidence in my decision making and now rely on my brain's
reaction to a business or personal situation. I have played the games for over six months now and it has become a part of my daily routine. And this is very different for me
as I am not a game player. The best part, of course, is the personal challenge of beating my own progress each day. I'm not happy until I have beaten at least one score!"
- Julie Adams, Age 57, Canada
"I read an article in The New York Times about research that had shown that working memory and other mental skills can be improved with training. I set out to take my brain to the gym and that's when I found Lumosity. I've been singing its praises every since!
At first, I just enjoyed the games but I found that memory and spatial orientation games were just plain hard for me to play...but I kept playing, working my way through
Basic Training. I'd try and try but I just wasn't making much progress. One day, I had a breakthrough and went through level after level of the Penguin Pursuit game. The
same thing happened with the Monster Garden game. Long before I finished the three training courses I have under my belt, I noticed that I could enter all ten digits of
conference call codes at work without checking the meeting notice a second time.
I play in a hand bell choir, where each person plays just a few notes. It requires that each person count in their head through the entire piece, not only to keep time, but
to keep their place in the music and ring at the right time. Of course, this all requires a tremendous amount of focus. As much I as love hand bells, playing was always
stressful. I started Lumosity in the summer, when the hand bell choir was on hiatus. When we started playing in the fall, I noticed a huge improvement in my ability to stay
'in the moment,' which has made my whole hand bell experience so much more fun.
Conference call codes and hand bells...not world hunger, but they are just two examples of the improvement Lumosity that has had made on all different parts of my life. My
life is easier and less stressful. I am better at a whole host of things just because I played some really fun games on my computer. Some of the best time and money I've
spent!
Of all the factors reviewed in a recent NIH report - including diet, physical exercise, social engagement, and other leisure activities - only cognitive training was found to have a high level of evidence for decreasing the risk of cognitive decline...
