How Attention Works

The filter that decides what gets in

Every second, your senses deliver far more information than your brain can consciously process. Selective attention is your brain's filtering system, deciding what gets in and what gets blocked. It's how you can read in a noisy café, follow one voice in a crowd, or stay locked into a task while the world buzzes around you. Without it, everything would feel equally urgent at once.

In real life...

When you need to focus, put your phone in another room, not just face-down on your desk. Research shows that physical separation is what matters: having the phone nearby reduces cognitive performance, even on silent, because part of your brain stays on standby. Out of sight isn't enough. Out of reach is what works.
