What is Spatial Fluency?

The idea-generation side of spatial thinking

Spatial fluency is your ability to generate new visual-spatial patterns quickly and creatively. It's the idea-generation side of spatial thinking. Rather than remembering existing patterns or rotating known shapes, you're inventing new ones on the fly. Architects sketching layouts, designers exploring forms, and engineers prototyping solutions all rely heavily on spatial fluency.

More details

In the research literature, this ability is often called figural fluency or design fluency. It's distinct from verbal fluency (generating words) and uses largely different brain regions, including the right hemisphere's parietal and frontal areas. People who score high on spatial fluency tend to be better at brainstorming visual solutions, more flexible in their problem-solving, and more comfortable working in ambiguous design spaces where there isn't one right answer.
