Lumosity Expands Product Offering to Include Language Category

San Francisco, Calif. - April 5, 2016 - Lumosity today announced the launch of its Language category, a set of new games designed to help players practice using language skills. The suite of five Language games includes a range of language skills and was designed to introduce players to new vocabulary, surface etymological foundations, illuminate nuances of definitions, and facilitate practice using words in context. The games are available in preview on lumosity.com, and the company plans to add more Language games and additional skill areas in 2016.

"At Lumosity, we’ve learned a great deal about creating adaptive, game-based products and we are excited to build on these learnings to create new experiences for our users," said Beverly Chung, Senior Product Manager at Lumosity. "We are always looking to create rich experiences for our users and we chose language as the first new area to explore because of feedback we’ve received from them."

Lumosity's Science and Games teams have partnered with vocabulary experts to build out the Language games. The Language category consists of Word Bubbles, Editor’s Choice, Taking Root, Continuum and Contextual. Word Bubbles is a verbal fluency game where users are presented with a phonemic stem and tasked with recalling as many words of various letter lengths as possible. In Editor’s Choice, users quickly select synonyms for a given word from a list. Taking Root teaches the meanings of various word roots and allows players to apply these learnings to define new words, while Continuum presents players with related words and asks them to order the words according to their meanings. Contextual involves reading comprehension, requiring players to identify and replace any incorrectly used words in a given text.

"Lumosity's new offering provides adults of all ages with an accessible and fun way to practice language skills. I especially like that it provides playful encounters with words and patterns related to words," said Judith Scott, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the University of California, Santa Cruz’s Education department, who worked with the Lumosity team to develop the new Language games.

The new Language category games are currently available in preview on lumosity.com. Over the next several months, the team plans to expand the suite of games, adding more content to the existing games and designing additional language exercises, at which point the team plans to make the games available both in Lumosity’s mobile apps and to free users. The Games team has begun prototyping new games involving other skills like math to further expand the breadth of Lumosity’s product offerings and develop robust complements to Lumosity’s core cognitive training product.
