FlexibilityUnderstanding Response Inhibition
How your brain stops an automatic response
Response inhibition is your brain's brake pedal, the ability to stop yourself from doing something you were about to do automatically. It's what keeps you from blurting out the wrong thing at dinner, or from hitting 'Reply All' when you meant to hit 'Reply.' Without it, you'd be a slave to every impulse.
In real life...
When you feel an impulse you want to resist, try the 'ten-second rule.' Commit to pausing for just ten seconds before acting. This gives your prefrontal cortex time to catch up with your impulse circuits. That brief delay is often all your brain needs to make the better choice.
