Is brain training backed by science? Yes. Cognitive training has become the subject of thousands of peer-reviewed studies, giving researchers a far deeper understanding of how cognition changes, adapts, and responds to experience. Researchers continue to study which approaches work best, for whom, and under what conditions, but it's clear that what was once a niche area of research has become a rapidly expanding field of scientific inquiry.
Advances in neuroscience, digital technologies, and our understanding of neuroplasticity have transformed how researchers study cognition. Scientists now have a deeper understanding of attention, memory, executive function, and healthy aging. Larger datasets, new research tools, and collaborations across neuroscience, psychology, medicine, engineering, and computer science have expanded both the scale of cognitive research and the questions researchers can ask.
The scientific literature reflects that progress. A PubMed search for studies containing the terms "cognitive training" or "brain training" illustrates how rapidly the field has grown. In 2000, just four studies matching those terms were published. By 2010, that number had grown to 85. It reached 302 in 2015, 545 in 2020, and 866 in 2025. By the middle of 2026, more than 660 additional studies had already been published.

More studies don't automatically mean every question has been answered. They do mean researchers have a much stronger foundation for understanding what cognitive training can and cannot do than they did twenty years ago.
This growth reflects a fundamental shift in how researchers study cognition. Digital research now makes it possible to conduct studies across larger participant populations, over longer periods of time, and with greater precision than many traditional laboratory approaches. As the science has matured, researchers have an opportunity to ask more sophisticated questions about how cognitive training works, who benefits, and under what conditions.
