Your Brain at 60+
What your brain gets better at with age
By 60, some cognitive systems have slowed. Names take longer to surface, multitasking gets harder, and new information needs more repetition to stick. But other systems are at peak. Vocabulary continues to grow into the 70s. Emotional regulation strengthens. Pattern recognition, drawing on decades of stored experience, gets faster and more accurate, even when raw processing speed has dropped. Older brains aren't just younger brains running slower. They're running on a different mix.
In real life...
If you're past 60, lean into what your brain is uniquely good at. Mentor someone. Take on roles that draw on judgment and pattern recognition rather than speed. Keep learning, but don't measure yourself against a 25-year-old's reaction time. The skills that compound with age, judgment, perspective, and emotional intelligence, are the ones that matter most for the decisions that actually shape a life.
