What is Proportional Reasoning?
Comparing and converting on the fly
Proportional reasoning is your ability to understand and compare ratios, fractions, and relative quantities. It's how you figure out that 30% off a $50 item is a better deal than 25% off a $40 item, or that doubling a recipe doesn't mean doubling the cooking time.
Proportional reasoning develops gradually through childhood and adolescence and remains useful throughout life. People with strong proportional reasoning find percentage discounts, recipe scaling, and unit conversions quick and intuitive. People without it tend to fall back on rules they've memorized, which work for familiar cases but break in novel ones. The skill is built by working with concrete examples (cooking, shopping, sports statistics) rather than abstract drills.
