Peak processing speed, but wisdom is still loading
Around age 25, your brain hits its peak for raw processing speed: the ability to take in new information quickly and react in the moment. But there's a twist. Your prefrontal cortex, the region responsible for judgment and impulse control, is one of the last areas to fully mature, finishing only in your mid-twenties.
This explains the common pattern of impulsive but quick decisions in early adulthood. The cognitive horsepower is fully online, but the executive control that helps you use it well is just finishing assembly. Many of life's biggest learning experiences happen in this window precisely because your brain is operating at full speed while still figuring out how to steer.
