Caffeine & Your Brain
Why coffee helps, and when it doesn't
Caffeine works by blocking adenosine, a molecule that builds up in your brain throughout the day and makes you feel sleepy. By occupying adenosine receptors without activating them, caffeine essentially tricks your brain into not feeling tired. It genuinely improves alertness, reaction time, and focus. But there's a catch. Your brain adapts by growing more adenosine receptors, which is why your morning coffee eventually just gets you back to baseline rather than giving you a boost.
In real life...
Time your caffeine to protect your sleep. Set a cutoff of early-to-mid afternoon, since caffeine's half-life means a 2 PM coffee can still affect you at 10 PM. If you want to reset your tolerance, tapering down gradually over a week or two will reduce withdrawal headaches. And remember, caffeine enhances focus on whatever you're doing, including scrolling social media, so pair it with intentional work.
