Why Names Are So Hard to Remember

Faces and names live in different brain systems

Remembering someone's name after hearing it once (while simultaneously processing their face, handshake, and what they're saying) is one of the most demanding things your brain does socially. Face-name recall requires linking a completely arbitrary label to a complex visual pattern, and your brain has no natural shortcut for it.

In real life...

When you meet someone new, try to use their name in conversation within the first 30 seconds, 'Nice to meet you, Sarah.' This forces your brain to actively retrieve the name while the face is still in front of you, strengthening the association before it fades.
