What is Vocabulary?
More than just knowing lots of words
Vocabulary isn't just about knowing lots of words. It's about having the right word ready at the right moment and understanding the subtle differences between similar options. A rich vocabulary lets you think more precisely (specific words map to specific concepts), express yourself more clearly, and absorb new information faster.
Unlike most cognitive abilities, vocabulary continues to grow well into your 70s. It's part of what's called crystallized intelligence, the accumulated knowledge that makes experienced thinkers so effective. The most reliable way to expand vocabulary is wide reading; people who read across genres pick up words organically, in context, which is how vocabulary actually sticks. Word lists alone rarely work, because words without context lack the meaningful associations that make them retrievable when you need them.
