What is Numerical Estimation?

Eyeballing quantities, fast

Numerical estimation is your brain's ability to 'eyeball' quantities, to quickly get a rough sense of how many, how much, or how big without counting or measuring precisely. It's the fast, intuitive side of number sense, and it's far more useful in daily life than exact calculation.

In real life...

Practice estimation by making predictions before you measure. Before you step on the scale, guess your weight. Before you check the time, estimate it. Before you count the items in your cart, estimate the total. Comparing your guesses to reality calibrates your approximate number system over time.
