Why Cramming Doesn't Work

Spaced repetition beats marathon study sessions

We've all done it, pulling an all-nighter before an exam, cramming everything in at the last minute. And it might even work for the test the next morning. But within days, most of that information evaporates. Decades of research show that spacing your study sessions over time, even if the total hours are the same, produces dramatically better long-term retention than massed practice.

In real life...

Use the spacing effect to your advantage. Review material at increasing intervals, after 1 day, then 3 days, then a week, then a month. Lumosity applies the same principle to cognitive skills, rotating you through different Training Areas so each one gets revisited with the right gap. In both cases, the slight discomfort of recalling something you've half-forgotten is the sign that deep learning is happening.
