Flow State

When the challenge fits the skill, time disappears

Flow is the state of complete absorption in a task, where hours pass without notice and effort feels effortless. It tends to happen when the challenge of what you're doing closely matches your current skill level. Neurologically, flow is associated with a temporary quieting of the prefrontal cortex, the brain region responsible for self-monitoring and second-guessing, which is why self-consciousness fades and time perception warps.

In real life...

To find flow more often, choose tasks that sit just beyond your current comfort zone, hard enough to demand full attention but not so hard that you feel overwhelmed. Eliminate distractions before you start, and give yourself at least 15–20 uninterrupted minutes, since flow typically takes time to build.
